Liverpool Are Still Sh*t!
So Liverpool managed to beat Chelsea for only the second time in 10 matches and all of a sudden people seem to think that Liverpool are a good team. However I think the win was more down to Mourinho’s strange choice of team and tactics, rather than Benitez’s ‘great’ skills as a manager. A fortunate free kick followed by probably the worst wall in the world gave Liverpool the lead and the second goal was beautifully taken, but rubbish play by Chelsea.
The wider picture
In the league Liverpool are still a long way off. Even with Chelsea’s poor form allowing the gap to close Liverpool still trail by 15 points. Say what you like, but that is a large figure. If Everton (46pts) had 15 extra points they would be 5th ahead of Arsenal (58pts). There may only be one team between Chelsea and Liverpool, but 15 points is a lot. Gerrard was saying that Liverpool had won the two big games (referring to the CL & FA cup semi-final matches), however if Liverpool had of won the two league matches against Chelsea (instead on losing at home 4-1 and away 2-0) they would only be nine points behind and still in with a shout.
Chelsea boring, what about the mighty Liverpool?
This season (with 3 games to play) in the League Liverpool have managed 12 one nil wins, Chelsea (boring, boring Chelsea) have only had six. Liverpool have also had 4 nil nils, Chelsea have had two. So in 16 matches Liverpool have scored one goal or less.
In 18 matches at home Liverpool have managed 29 goals which is a fair amount. However Chelsea have scored 44 and apart from one draw have won all of the home games in the league.
Even in Liverpool’s biggest league win of the season (5-1) they were helped by an own goal and two goals in extra time when Fulham had thrown in the towel. Liverpool have managed to score more than two goals in five matches, Chelsea have done it 11 matches. Put all these things together and you realise just how far behind Liverpool are.
The Future
If Gerrard finally decides to leave this summer it would be a major set back for the club. However I’ve no doubt that the fans will once again make sure he stays for ‘family’ reasons. Moreover if the great Benitez is tempted away it would be a huge blow as he seems to be establishing good foundations for the club.
Champions next season? No
Maybe win another cup competition? Yes
Which one? FA or League Cup. No fluke in the European Cup this time.
